Toriyama said The Last of Us Part 2 showed real great consideration for diversity. He said he can imagine that what a massive cost it had to debug on that game and change the UI. However, he believes achieving that makes this game a great one and a pioneer setting a bench mark for the game industry.

What were the changes?

The Last of Us Part 2 was released a little over a year ago -about two months after the Final Fantasy 7 remake was debuted in April, it attracted attention because of the complicated relationship seen between two of its main characters, Dina and Ellie. It also mentioned transgender issues during its distressing journey through the ruins of Seattle.

Reactions

The Last of Us Part 2 ended up being announced as one of the best games of 2020 and winning IGN’s People’s Choice Game of the Year for 2020. The impact of it has even rippled to Square Enix, although Final Fantasy 7 Remake had been released on an earlier Date.

How they came up with the idea?

Toriyama explained he thinks that for every person involved in making content expressing diversity and including LGBTQ+ is an important issue. He added they used the latest technology to rebuilt the original game when producing Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but they felt they should consider things other than the technical side; so they decided to update the story content and make the story in line with modern sensibilities.

Did LGBTQ community like it?

Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade, an upgraded version for the PlayStation 5, was released last month by Square Enix. Queer commentators have been discussing the sequence in Honey Bee Inn- which includes putting Cloud in a dress and features a huge dance number- a lot. Some said they liked the sequence, while some others said it seems complicated to them.

Soon, we will see if it sets the stage for seeing more in Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2.
