Morpheus project

Virtual reality (VR) headsets have been around since the 1960s, and, as expected, they have continued to evolve and improve over the years. You may occasionally see virtual reality headsets in the game room, and from time to time, home models will be snatched by enthusiasts and disappear, but now they feel more comfortable in games, research laboratories or military training facilities. Here is everything you need to know about Morpheus project.

The advent of virtual reality

But the situation has changed. Since the advent of virtual reality, graphics processing, motion tracking and display technology have been greatly improved, and everything has become smaller and cheaper. We now have more powerful processors, countless sensors, and small high-resolution displays that are bringing consumer virtual reality into the realm of possibilities.

The Oculus Rift VR headset

The Oculus Rift VR headset development kit was launched with much fanfare in 2013, making relatively inexpensive home models seem likely to appear in the near future. Now, a large company is entering the field of virtual reality. Sony Computer Entertainment has developed a virtual reality headset code-named Project Morpheus, designed specifically for the PlayStation 4 game system.

HMZ personal 3D display

One thing you need to know about Morpheus project is that at the time of writing this article, it is in the prototype stage, so once the consumer model appears, the specifications, features, and name may change and finally it is available, but it is just as interesting. Although we are now getting detailed information about Project Morpheus, it has been in use for more than three years, so this device is not just Sony’s response to Oculus Rift. Sony is already manufacturing virtual cinema headsets like the HMZ personal 3D display device.

PlayStation game system

In 2010, the company released the PlayStation Move motion controller for PlayStation 3, which can realize complex motion tracking. At that time, various internal groups began to in-depth study the possibility of virtual reality of the PlayStation game system. The groups began to exchange ideas and share their work with each other. Senior Sony officials noticed this and became an official project.

A team named Grover is made up of members of the hardware group Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) R&D and Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, used to produce prototypes, and has gone through many iterations. First, they glued the PS Move controller into the HEADPLAY personal theater system, which is a third-party headset for watching movies, games, and other media.

Sony HMZ viewer

Then, in 2011, they hooked up the PS Move component to the higher resolution Sony HMZ viewer. In 2012, they produced a demo video of a virtual reality prototype, which consisted of an HMZ headset and an additional Move and another Move controller in the user’s hands for greater control. Your field of view is much narrower than your end goal, but it is used for demonstration purposes.
