What is Sling TV?

Sling TV is a streaming service that allows wired TV to watch TV without cable or satellite subscription. The biggest difference between Sling TV and cable is that for Sling TV to work, you need a high-speed internet connection and a compatible device. The good news is that if you have a computer, smartphone or a reset box, you probably have a device that works with Sling TV. You can even watch shows from your phone or tablet to your TV, or watch Sling TV directly on your smart TV if compatible.

In addition to providing alternatives to cable and satellite TV providers, Sling TV has a number of direct competitors that also broadcast live TV. Vue from PlayStation, YouTube TV, and DirecTV now all provide access to multiple live TV stations, just like Sling TV. CBS All Access is another similar service that only offers live TV from your local CBS station. Other streaming services, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, offer TV streams on demand but do not actually offer live TV streams such as Sling TV.

Orange Chains: 30+ channels, including many popular basic cable channels such as ESPN, Disney Channel and AMC.

Sling Blue: 40+ channels, including some networks like Fox and NBC, Regional Sports, and the NFL.

Orange + Blue Chains: 50+ channels, containing everything from both yellow-orange stones and blue chains.

Note: Local channel availability varies by geographic area.

Which plan is right for you?

If you can watch local TV with an HD antenna, Sling Orange is a cheap alternative to cable. It does not provide access to every local station, but is one of the most popular major cable channels, including Sports from ESPN and Kids Show from Disney and Cartoon Network. Sling Blue costs a bit more than Sling Orange, but if you have an alternative to getting a TV with an antenna, this is a good alternative. The plan does not include ESPN or Disney Channel, but in addition to a number of core cable channels such as USA and FX, NBC and Fox. Orange + Blue Chains cost a bit more than Sling Blue, but they include everything and also allow you to watch more than any other app at the same time.

How Many Shows Can You Watch with Sling on TV at Once?

Services like Sling TV limit the number of shows or streams you can watch at a time. This means that depending on the app you choose, kids may be able to watch the Disney Channel on their iPad while you watch the NFL Network on TV.

The number of streams you can watch at once with Sling TV is based on the program you choose:

Orange Chains: Limited to one stream at a time.

Sling Blue: Restricted to three streams at a time.

Orange + Blue Chain: Divided into four streams at a time (one orange channel and three blue chain channels).

What internet speed is required for TV sling?

Before you choose and sign up, also make sure your internet speed is somewhat high.

The image quality you experience from Sling depends on the speed of your connection, so do not expect a high-resolution image quality on a low-speed data connection.

According to Sling TV, you need:

3 Mbps to play a low quality image on portable devices such as your phone or tablet.

5 Mbps for a single stream to a TV or PC.

25+ Mbps for full use of multiple streams provided by Sling Blue or Sling Orange + Blue.
